"Detoxification relieves inebriation, removing the drug from the system safely. This provides a less ill mind and body but does not treat the underlying disease, nor does it prevent immediate return to use upon discharge. The American Medical Association acknowledged that addiction met all the criteria of a disease and labeled it such in the 1950's. The Canadian Medical Association followed a short time later.

True alcoholics or addicts are unable alone to change or modify their behaviour. These individuals make up about 10% of the Canadian population. Their brain chemistry has been so altered that it is impossible for these individuals to ever return to moderate drinking or using.

To enable the alcoholic or addict, including process addiction-gambling, to learn how not to have to return to use is the purpose of a month long, abstinence based in-patient program. The alcoholic or addict must have time and the support of caring professionals to regain a bit of SELF-RESPECT. Addiction causes self hatred because the person so afflicted has spent years out of control and acting counter to his own moral principles. That self-hatred is often the primary stimulus to return to use and must be altered.

He/she needs a total understanding that reuse of an addicting substance retriggers the disease--it's the first use that renders one out of control--and that daily he/she needs to COMMIT TO ABSTINENCE.

The individual requires help and support to reflect on the progress of the disease in his/her life and to have some insight if these same THOUGHTS AND BEHAVIORS...begin to occur again when the person is out of treatment, or when these same triggers....begin to be present again in his/her life.

The individual requires to see that personal efforts to stop or moderate will fail. To accomplish those goals and he/she must ....SPIRITUAL SUPPORTS on a regular basis for the rest of the individual's life....These supports must be put in place while in treatment and be WAITING upon return to his/her home environment.

This reprogramming of a life can simply not be appreciated in Detox where the individual's primary concern is to relieve the sickness of withdrawal. Optimal and efficient passing on of these learning's and acquiring and practicing these behaviours occurs in a 28 day abstinence based treatment program."
