Addiction
is an intensively studied disease. At this time-multiple
investigations are in process using the most sophisticated
techniques now available to visualize and compare
the potentially addicted, addicted and non-addicted
brains both under the effects of and prior to being
affected by a potentially addicting stimulus. The
disease's initiating abnormality appears to be a
genetically based deficiency in hedonic tone making
the individual-so-predisposed more vulnerable than
the general population to the reinforcing effects
of substance (drugs or alcohol) or process (gambling).
Once having tried that which has potential to addict,
multiple use is nearly inevitable. Once use becomes
chronic and excessive, PERMANENT brain changes are
hardwired which create intense craving in the presence
of the stimulus, or feelings or paraphernalia associated
with the acquisition of the stimulating substance
or event. This makes reuse nearly inevitable.
Only complete abstinence and an understanding of
this disease process and its permanence, as well
as retraining in a lifestyle where satisfaction
comes from new more healthy sources can free the
individual from the inevitable and deadly consequences
of his/her genetic makeup.
Crosbie House has been the most effective treatment
centre in NS. See (Statistics 1998 Drug Dependency
Services outcome study). It is now reopened on a
private basis in New Minas, NS. It is abstinence
based supportive and caring treatment with a firm
12 Steps base.
It is for addicts: gambling, drugs, alcohol-people who are unable to
modify their behavior on their own.
It is not a detox; in the main clients should be detoxed prior to admission,
though pre admission to a detoxification service can be arranged.
Crosbie has 2 physician board members, one an addictionist, the other with
years of experience and credibility in the treatment of addiction.
These Docs are actively involved in assessing potential clients and with
the clients in program on a weekly basis for educational programs and
counseling.
You may access us by phone, email or fax:
From YOU we would need a BRIEF past medical history; current medical
problems that might impact on safety while in program or ability to
participate in program; medications and allergies. We are WHEELCHAIR
ACCESSIBLE.
The client in most cases should be free of all psychoactive medications: opioids,
benzodiazepines, cannabinoids. One of our physicians would be happy to discuss this
with you in an attempt to accommodate if this appears to be medically
counterindicated.
This program as you know is unique in NS. Such a service has now been lacking
for three years. We are dependent on funding and support by individuals.
If you can, a donation would help us to continue to operate for the good of all.
We are a registered charity and can provide tax receipts.
If your patient needs us and is unable to access the program due to financial constraints,
please first of all call us. There may be alternatives. Finally please seek
government funding for non-insured but required service by
contacting us
